Oppositional-Defiant Disorder

Children with oppositional-defiant disorder (ODD) typically either ignore or defy rules and expectations, most commonly at home. They may appear constantly argumentative and difficult to manage. Often these behaviors are most evident with those that they are close to, such as family members. In a clinical setting, they may not act out and may characterize their behavior as a response to unfair rules and demands. In addition, children with ODD can experience low self-esteem, low frustration tolerance and mood instability.

This disorder develops between age 8 and early adolescence.

Parent training, behavioral training and use of cognitive-behavioral strategies for children can be effective.
