Adolescence is a time when dramatic changes occur in social, cognitive, behavioral and emotional areas of functioning. Therefore, an individual’s development is more easily influenced during this time. Concurrently, research indicates that a significant percentage of adolescents will experience adaptive difficulties at some point in time. As a result, it is an important time to focus on development of important adaptive skills, which can result in adequate adult functioning.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy for adolescents is fundamentally similar in theory and practice. However, one has to take into consideration the age-related differences in cognitive, social, affective and behavioral areas of functioning. Additionally, the role of the family, the social environment of the individual, as well as the overall context, are of particular importance. Both risks and resiliency factors must be evaluated when determining a treatment plan. Adolescents tend to respond very well to the structured, skill based and time limited aspects of CBT.
