Recognizing that every child is unique, it is important to identify early in treatment, the child’s behavior pattern, as well as strengths and weaknesses in order to build on and implement parenting methods that would best fit the child.
With that in mind, parent training, as a supplement to individual treatment, or as an independent treatment goal, consists of the following:
• Assist parents in expanding the repertoire of intervention options and behavioral management skills.
• Teach how to implement parenting practices that are consistent.
• Determine age-appropriate rules.
• Use positive reinforcement to encourage positive behavior.
• Assist parents in identifying and implementing specific skills that can support their child’s treatment and progress.
